Some Internet Terms

There are millions of websites existing on the Internet and many are added daily. You access a website by typing its URL in the address bar of your web browser. You must have observed there are many types of extensions ( like.com, org, .in, etc.) appended to every URL. Have you ever wondered about the following?

  • How is a web page located on the Web?
  • What are these.com, .edu, .org, .net, .info, etc. extensions, which are appended to every URL?
  • What is an IP address?
  • What is a domain name?

You need to know about these basic and important terms when using the Internet. Let us learn about some of these terms.

Internet Protocol (IP) Address

Every computer on the Internet has a unique numeric address as a set of four numbers separated by periods like 205 30.100.15. This address is known as the IP address. IP addresses are used to transfer information across the Internet. If you type www.quickstudyhelper.com into your browser, your computer converts this name into the equivalent IP Address (like 67 1946.11) and then retrieves the homepage of the website using this IP address. While you are connected to the Internet, you are assigned a unique IP address as well.

Domain Name

For a user, it is not easy to remember an IP address. So a domain name like (quickstudyhelper.com) is used. It is a unique name that identifies an Internet site.

Fact File: A domain name is only a part of the URL. A URL or Uniform Resource Locator is a complete Internet address including the correct Internet protocol like https://, ftp://, news: and mail. For example, in the URL https://quickstudyhelper.com, the domain name is quickstudyhelper.com.

Domain Name Server (DNS)

A domain name server DNS converts the domain name to an equivalent IP address it translates a domain name such as quick study helper.com into the Internet protocol IP numbers to find the collective website.

Top Level Domains (TLDs)

Top-level domains are the last component of a domain name. For example, the domain “quickstudyhelper.com” has a top-level domain of “com” and the domain “xyz.org” has a top-level domain of “org”.

The top-level domain names are assigned according to the nature of the organization. Below is in the table, you can see some top-level domain names (TLDs):

About VoIP

The acronym VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. It is the technology of transmitting voice conversations via the Internet.

Internet Telephony

VoIP uses your Internet connection (dial-up or broadband) to make free calls over the Internet.

Using Skype

Skype is a software that allows users to make telephone calls over the Internet. You can use your Internet connection and turn your computer into an Internet phone and make free Skype-to-Skype calls.

Skype

Skype-to-Skype calls, video calls, and instant messaging are free at any time of the day or night, anywhere in the world, while calls to other landlines and mobile phones can be made for a fee. Additional features include instant messaging, file transfer, and video conferencing. That is a great thing about Skype.

Remember Skype uses VoIP technology for making phone calls to other people.

About Podcasting

A podcast is like a radio program except people can download a podcast to a portable media player (such as an iPod or other MP3 player) and listen to it at their own convenience.

Podcasting

Podcasts can be created by anyone with the right equipment for personal use. (computer, Internet connection, or audio recorder) and uploaded to a server on the Internet where they can be found and downloaded by podcatchers (programs that can identify a podcast.). Some popular podcatchers are Itunes, Doppler, Juice, happy fish, Mad cat, etc. which can be freely downloaded from the Internet.

These are some of the reasons you might want to create your own podcasts:

  1. You always wanted your own talk show but you do not own a radio station or work at one.
  2. You are a musician and you want to build up a fan base by providing some of your music to potential fans.
  3. You are a speaker and you want to sell your audio seminars but do not want to create CDs, labels, mail them, etc.
  4. You are a school Principal and you want to create your own weekly message to the students.
